Welcome to

EXETER
SYNAGOGUE

welcome!

Exeter Hebrew Congregation is a welcoming, non-denominational small Jewish community serving members in Devon, Cornwall, Somerset, Dorset, and beyond.

We are Britain's third oldest active synagogue, our small but beautiful building in central Exeter was built in 1763. Our community today remains small, but vibrant and active.

We hold weekly services (including monthly family services), regular community meals, and celebrate all the major Jewish holidays. Read on to find out what's on at Exeter Synagogue...

About

WHAT'S ON

Join us for our weekly Shabbat services at the synagogue:

Shabbat Morning Services
Held every Saturday morning at the synagogue. Often followed by a community bring and share meal. Check our What's On page for details of who is leading, and the type of service.

Friday Night Services
These take place weekly, typically at the synagogue, and are also regularly followed by a community meal. Please note that some Friday night services may be held exclusively on Zoom, so be sure to check in advance.

All our services are broadcast live on Zoom for those who prefer to join remotely.

In addition to Shabbat services, Ma'ariv services are hosted over Zoom on Monday to Thursday evenings from 6:15pm. To view what's on in the next few weeks, visit the 'What's On' page of our website:

If you are member of another congregation and are visiting the area, please feel free to attend our services. We ask that you contact us about a week in advance so that we know you are coming.

OUR SERVICES

We hold services nearly every Shabbat and for most festivals.

Exeter is not affiliated to any of the movements and current services range from Liberal to Reform to Masorti, and occasionally Orthodox.

Visiting rabbis and service leaders are welcomed from a variety of denominations. This means some services have more English, and some are entirely Hebrew, some have more words spoken, others sung to traditional tunes, and others to modern tunes.

We try to make all services accessible to everyone regardless of your religious background. Most services are available on Zoom, and some services may only be accessible via Zoom. To speak to us about coming along, or to retrieve access to our Zoom link, get in touch.

All of our in-person services and events have professional security provided by award winning All Elite Security LTD.

HOLIDAYS

We typically celebate: Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Succot, Purim, Pesach and Shavuot together. Please see the 'What's On' page for upcoming events.

MEALS

We love a community meal in Exeter! Typically we have a (vegetarian and kosher fish) bring and share community lunch on the 1st and 3rd Shabbat of the month, and a Friday night dinner on the second Shabbat of the month. To find out exactly what's on on our calendar, sign up to our newsletter (scroll down).

CHEDER/FAMILIES SERVICES

On the third Shabbat of the month we have a visiting Rabbi who leads a learning and family Shabbat and cheder. The Friday night service, from 6.45pm is  followed by dinner. Find out more about our Cheder and Families service here
